Birthday parties

Party games, real favors, and themes kids remember

Kids remember the games, not the screens. Two classic games, a craft, cake, and a favor that won't end up in the trash by Monday. Print this page for the rules.

Printable game rules

Freeze dance

Ages 3โ€“8 ยท You need: A speaker

Play music; when it stops, everyone freezes. Anyone who moves does a silly dance to rejoin (no one is "out" for under-5s).

Treasure hunt

Ages 4โ€“10 ยท You need: Clues (write your own), a treasure

Hide 6โ€“10 picture or word clues around the yard, each leading to the next, with a small treasure at the end. Split big groups into teams.

Egg-and-spoon race

Ages 4โ€“10 ยท You need: Spoons, eggs

Balance a hard-boiled or plastic egg on a spoon and race to a line and back. Dropped eggs go back to the start.

Musical chairs (kind version)

Ages 4โ€“8 ยท You need: Chairs, music

Remove a chair each round but nobody leaves: everyone has to share the remaining chairs. It ends in a giggling pile.

Duck, duck, goose

Ages 3โ€“6 ยท You need: Nothing

Sitting in a circle, one child taps heads saying "duck" and picks a "goose" who chases them around the circle.

Obstacle course

Ages 4โ€“12 ยท You need: Whatever is in the garage

Hula hoops, cones, a board for balancing, a blanket to crawl under. Time each run and let kids redesign it.

Sack race

Ages 5โ€“12 ยท You need: Pillowcases

Hop in pillowcases or sacks to the finish.

Pass the parcel

Ages 3โ€“8 ยท You need: Wrapping paper, small prizes

Wrap a small prize in many layers with a sticker or note in each. Pass it while music plays; unwrap one layer when it stops.

Simon says

Ages 3โ€“7 ยท You need: Nothing

"Simon says touch your nose." Only follow commands that start with "Simon says."

Scavenger bingo

Ages 6โ€“12 ยท You need: Printed cards, pencils

Give teams a bingo card of things to find outside: a feather, something red, a Y-shaped stick.

Party themes that don't need a screen

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Pirates

A treasure hunt, eye patches, a "plank" (a board on the grass). Use our treasure hunt rules or HABA's boxed version.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Mad scientists

Baking soda volcanoes, slime-free "potions" with food coloring, lab coats from old shirts.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Campout

A backyard tent, flashlight tag, s'mores (adults at the fire). Headlamps make great favors.

Favors that aren't junk

Skip the light-up toys (many 2026 recalls involved loose button batteries; see product alerts). These are small, useful, and get used.

Sarah's Silks Star Cape & Crown Set

21% below the maker's regular priceAges 3โ€“8 yrs
$41$52 on sarahssilks.com, checked 2026-10-20

A silk cape becomes a superhero, a queen or a night sky. Open-ended dress-up that folds into a pocket and doesn't steer kids toward any one character.

Honest drawback: Silk needs a gentle wash. It's a cape, not a costume, which is the point but may disappoint a kid who wants Elsa.

โš ๏ธ Use as a cape only while awake and supervised. Nothing around the neck at sleep.

Melissa & Doug Water Wow! Space

Ages 3โ€“6 yrs
$8.99 on melissaanddoug.com, checked 2026-10-20

A water pen "paints" color onto the page, then it dries and does it again. There's zero mess, it's silent, and it's endlessly reusable. Parents swear by it for restaurants.

What real parents say: A Fatherly writer calls Water Wow his family's flight-saver with a toddler, and says visiting adults get absorbed in it too. Sources

Honest drawback: The magic wears thin by about age 6.
