Squishy "dumpling" and mystery-bun toys: water beads inside
The viral squishy dumplings and buns have had a run of recalls. In each case the CPSC says the toys contained water beads that expand beyond the federal limit, which is a serious ingestion risk for small children. The products in these recalls came from small trading companies and marketplace sellers, not established toy brands.
What to do
- Check the recall pages above. If yours matches, stop using it and follow the refund instructions.
- If a squishy feels like it has little beads or gel balls inside, or you can't tell, keep it away from children under 3.

Tegu
Built to lastAges 1–6 yrs
$28 on tegu.com, checked 2026-10-20
Six chunky magnetic wood pieces that stick to each other and to tray tables. It's the most quietly brilliant restaurant toy we know: no rolling away, no noise, and no small loose magnets.
What real parents say: One family reviewer reports almost ten years of playing, chewing and crashing on Tegu magnetic blocks. Sources
Honest drawback: Six pieces is a short game for older kids. It shines for ages 1–4.
Sarah's Silks
22% below the maker's regular priceAges 1–8 yrs
$28$36 on sarahssilks.com, checked 2026-10-20
The most underrated travel item there is. Peekaboo for babies, a tablecloth picnic for toddlers, a magic trick for 5-year-olds, and it weighs nothing.
Honest drawback: They're white, so they get loved and dirty fast. Toss them in a lingerie bag to wash.
Melissa & Doug
Ages 3–6 yrs
$8.99 on melissaanddoug.com, checked 2026-10-20
A water pen "paints" color onto the page, then it dries and does it again. There's zero mess, it's silent, and it's endlessly reusable. Parents swear by it for restaurants.
What real parents say: A Fatherly writer calls Water Wow his family's flight-saver with a toddler, and says visiting adults get absorbed in it too. Sources
Honest drawback: The magic wears thin by about age 6.

Magnetic stick-figure sets, fidget sliders and speed cubes
Several magnetic toys sold online were recalled in 2026 because small, powerful magnets can come loose. If a child swallows more than one, they can attract across the intestines. These recalls involved marketplace sellers with names like GBYMIUY and BUSOHA.
What to do
- Count magnets back into the box after play. If a tile cracks and a magnet is exposed, bin it.
- If you suspect a child swallowed a magnet, seek emergency care. Don't wait for symptoms.

Tegu

$40$50 on tegu.com, checked 2026-10-20
Beautiful wood blocks in a modern palette. They look nice enough to leave out in the living room, which is half the battle for getting kids to play with blocks.
Honest drawback: Non-magnetic, so towers topple more easily than with Tegu's magnetic line. Some kids find that frustrating, others find it more satisfying.
Gamewright
Ages 6+
See current price on the maker's site
A card game that sneaks in memory and strategy. A 6-year-old can genuinely beat Grandpa, which is why it gets requested.
Honest drawback: Small card deck: take a zip bag so you don't lose cards under the restaurant booth.
Magna-Tiles
Can't-miss classicBuilt to lastAges 3–10 yrs
$49.99 on magnatiles.com, checked 2026-10-20
The original magnetic tile, not a knockoff, which matters with magnets. Kids build walls, houses and rocket ships on day one and are still inventing at 9. Siblings can share it without a fight because there's always another tile.
What real parents say: Wirecutter's former baby-and-kid editor says Magna-Tiles are her one answer when asked for a "holy-grail" toy, because they have about the longest play life of anything besides Lego. Sources
Honest drawback: Pricey per piece, and 32 tiles runs out fast once kids get ambitious. Most families add a second set.

"Montessori" busy boards and pull-string teethers
Many 2026 recalls carried the word "Montessori" in the listing: busy boards with small parts or magnets, pull-string teethers that can break into choking-size pieces, and one busy board recalled for lead paint. Name brands recall too. Skip Hop, HABA and Melissa & Doug each recalled a baby or toddler product this year, and they did it publicly with clear remedies.
What to do
- "Montessori" isn't a safety standard. It's often just a keyword in a listing.
- Tug every piece of a baby toy hard. Anything that comes off and fits through a toilet-paper tube is a choking risk.

Good brands recall too, and that's a feature
Melissa & Doug recalled a Target-exclusive Fire Truck Activity Board (choking). HABA USA recalled its Rainbow Rattle (choking and ingestion). Skip Hop recalled Elmo silicone teethers (choking). We still list these brands: an accountable maker who recalls publicly, with a clear remedy, is exactly what "vetted" means. If you own one of these specific items, follow the recall instructions.
What to do
- Register products (the postcard in the box, or the maker's site) so you hear about recalls directly.
- Search the CPSC site for anything you were handed down.

Squishy toys: don't heat them, and trust your nose
On August 5, 2026 the CPSC warned about fake and counterfeit squishy toys that may contain unsafe chemicals, water beads or small parts. It repeated that squishies should never be microwaved or heated: they can burst and cause serious burns. In Canada, Health Canada received 36 reports (most about odor) and said it had not confirmed a specific risk or found non-compliance. A 2018 Danish EPA study of 12 foam squishies found chemical emissions at levels it considered unacceptable in a "child sleeps with it" scenario.
What to do
- Never microwave or heat a squishy, and don't leave one in a hot car.
- A strong chemical smell, or an oily or sticky feel, is a reason to toss it (CPSC tip).
- Keep squishies out of beds.

Sarah's Silks

$41$52 on sarahssilks.com, checked 2026-10-20
A silk cape becomes a superhero, a queen or a night sky. Open-ended dress-up that folds into a pocket and doesn't steer kids toward any one character.
Honest drawback: Silk needs a gentle wash. It's a cape, not a costume, which is the point but may disappoint a kid who wants Elsa.
⚠️ Use as a cape only while awake and supervised. Nothing around the neck at sleep.

Water beads: the new federal rule, and our simpler rule
A federal standard for water-bead toys took effect March 12, 2026. It limits how far the beads can expand and requires warnings. The CPSC's own advice is that the safest action is to remove them from any environment with children, and PIRG urges the same. We agree.
What to do
- For sensory play, use rice, oats, dried beans (age-appropriate) or water itself.
