Magna-Tiles Classic 32-Piece Set

Can't-miss classic

The original magnetic tile, not a knockoff, which matters with magnets. Kids build walls, houses and rocket ships on day one and are still inventing at 9. Siblings can share it without a fight because there's always another tile.

Honest drawback: Pricey per piece, and 32 tiles runs out fast once kids get ambitious. Most families add a second set.

What real parents say

Wirecutter's former baby-and-kid editor says Magna-Tiles are her one answer when asked for a "holy-grail" toy, because they have about the longest play life of anything besides Lego. Parents.com testers say the 100-piece set lasted from toddlerhood to the pre-teen years in their own homes. Common advice: check tiles now and then and throw out any cracked ones.

Where this comes from (read by us 2026-10-20; summarized in our words, not quoted):

Real-world feedback drives our picks. Star ratings are one signal we read critically. How we weigh feedback.

What the maker says about age (verbatim from the product page, checked 2026-10-20):

  • “MAGNA-TILES sets are loved by builders ages 3-99 and designed for kids to enjoy, without instructions or adult assistan…”
  • “Great for Gifting: The perfect starter set for kids ages 3+ beginning their MAGNA-TILES building journey.”

Our suggested ages: 3–10 yrs. We never suggest an age younger than the maker's minimum. Ours may be older.

No warning text appeared on the product page when we checked. Packaging often carries warnings (for example small parts, magnets or tip-over) that websites don't show. Read the box.

20% below the maker's regular priceBuilt to lastAges 3–10 yrs
$40$50 on tegu.com, checked 2026-10-20

Beautiful wood blocks in a modern palette. They look nice enough to leave out in the living room, which is half the battle for getting kids to play with blocks.

Honest drawback: Non-magnetic, so towers topple more easily than with Tegu's magnetic line. Some kids find that frustrating, others find it more satisfying.

PlanToys 50 Unit Blocks

$89.99 on plantoys.com, checked 2026-10-20

Proper unit blocks, the kind every good preschool classroom has, made from reclaimed rubberwood. PlanToys says they use formaldehyde-free glue and water-based dyes.

Honest drawback: Fifty blocks is a starter set. Classrooms use hundreds.
