Screen-free tech

Yoto vs Toniebox, screen-free cameras, and a first phone that isn't a smartphone

You're not anti-tech. Some tech gives kids independence without a feed, an algorithm or a glowing screen. Here's what we think counts, and why.

Yoto Player (4th Gen)

Ages 3โ€“12 yrs
$149.99 on us.yotoplay.com, checked 2026-10-20

Kids pop in a card to play an audiobook, music or podcast. It's no screen, no feed and no algorithm, and the child is in charge. It's the single best "screen replacement" in the catalog, especially for quiet time.

What real parents say: A Wirecutter writer calls it her daughters' favorite gift ever: three years in, it runs bedtime and fills playdates. Sources

Honest drawback: Cards add up (make-your-own cards help). The parent app needs Wi-Fi for setup, and it's still media, so we use it with limits at bedtime.

Yoto Mini (4th Gen)

Ages 3โ€“12 yrs
$109.99 on us.yotoplay.com, checked 2026-10-20

The portable Yoto, pocket-sized for car seats and plane rows with headphones. Our favorite airplane "screen" that isn't one.

What real parents say: A Wirecutter writer calls it her daughters' favorite gift ever: three years in, it runs bedtime and fills playdates. Sources

Honest drawback: Smaller speaker, and headphones for flights are sold separately.

Toniebox 2 Starter Set

Ages 1โ€“8 yrs
$149.99 on us.tonies.com, checked 2026-10-20

A squishy cube and figurines: set a character on top and it plays. It's the easiest player for little hands (ages 1+ per the maker), and the figures double as toys.

What real parents say: In WIRED's testing it was the easiest player for a toddler to figure out: put a figure on top and it plays. Sources

Honest drawback: Figures are pricey, and they're collectibles. Set a limit early.

Camp Snap screen-free camera

Ages 6โ€“16 yrs
$74.99 on campsnapphoto.com, checked 2026-10-20

A digital camera with no screen: you click and you find out later, like film. Kids look at the world instead of the display. A hit with tweens.

What real parents say: Wirecutter found it simple and sturdy. Sources

Honest drawback: Photos need a computer to download, which is a parent job.

Tin Can kids' phone

Ages 6โ€“13 yrs
$100 on tincan.kids, checked 2026-10-20

A real landline-style phone for kids to call approved friends. It brings back the "call your friend to play" independence without a smartphone.

What real parents say: A Wirecutter writer whose kids are 6 and 9 says that after months of use, they learned phone manners and set up their own playdates, and they stopped asking for a smartphone. Sources

Honest drawback: Needs a service plan. Check Tin Can's current terms.

Our position

Audio players count as screen-free: no visual screen, no feed, and the child chooses. They're still media, so we use a timer or night mode at bedtime and prefer stories and music to endless content. Setup needs a parent's app and Wi-Fi. Screen-free cameras count too: no display, no internet. For phones, wait for a smartphone (the Wait Until 8th pledge is one way to find other families), and use a landline-style phone or a basic phone sooner if they need to reach you.
