Toniebox 2 Starter Set

A squishy cube and figurines: set a character on top and it plays. It's the easiest player for little hands (ages 1+ per the maker), and the figures double as toys.

Honest drawback: Figures are pricey, and they're collectibles. Set a limit early.

What real parents say

In WIRED's testing it was the easiest player for a toddler to figure out: put a figure on top and it plays. Tom's Guide calls the soft box very durable and a big hit with younger kids, though its sound is a little muffled next to the Yoto. Common gripes: the figures add up at roughly $15–20 each, they aren't labeled with what's on them, and there's no carry handle.

Where this comes from (read by us 2026-10-20; summarized in our words, not quoted):

Real-world feedback drives our picks. Star ratings are one signal we read critically. How we weigh feedback.

What the maker says about age (verbatim from the product page, checked 2026-10-20):

  • “…ces, and built to help them grow. Loved by kids (and their families!) ages 1–12+, Toniebox 2 boosts independence and confidence as they learn, play, a…”
  • “Store tag: Age Range | 1-2”

Our suggested ages: 1–8 yrs. We never suggest an age younger than the maker's minimum. Ours may be older.

No warning text appeared on the product page when we checked. Packaging often carries warnings (for example small parts, magnets or tip-over) that websites don't show. Read the box.

Tegu Non-Magnetic Perfect Blocks, 120 pieces

20% below the maker's regular priceBuilt to lastAges 3–10 yrs
$40$50 on tegu.com, checked Oct 20, 2026

Beautiful wood blocks in a modern palette. They look nice enough to leave out in the living room, which is half the battle for getting kids to play with blocks.

Honest drawback: Non-magnetic, so towers topple more easily than with Tegu's magnetic line. Some kids find that frustrating, others find it more satisfying.

PlanToys 50 Unit Blocks

Built to lastAges 2–8 yrs
$89.99 on plantoys.com, checked Oct 20, 2026

Proper unit blocks, the kind every good preschool classroom has, made from reclaimed rubberwood. PlanToys says they use formaldehyde-free glue and water-based dyes.

Honest drawback: Fifty blocks is a starter set. Classrooms use hundreds.
