What real parents say

A Wirecutter editor's family has owned one for more than three years and two more for a year. The covers, zippers and foam all still look new after repeated washing. Air-dry the covers so they don't shrink, and expect stuffing the foam back in to be fiddly. At least five other Wirecutter families own one.

Where this comes from (read by us 2026-10-20; summarized in our words, not quoted):

Real-world feedback drives our picks. Star ratings are one signal we read critically. How we weigh feedback.

What the maker says about age (verbatim from the product page, checked 2026-10-20):

  • “For ages 1+”
  • “The Nugget® is for ages 1+ years old for imagination, exploration, and adventure — not for sleeping !”

Our suggested ages: 2–12 yrs. We never suggest an age younger than the maker's minimum. Ours may be older.

No warning text appeared on the product page when we checked. Packaging often carries warnings (for example small parts, magnets or tip-over) that websites don't show. Read the box.

Safety note from us: Supervise climbing/jumping; keep away from windows.
Adventurous pick: use with adult supervision and the right safety gear. Read risky play, done carefully for how to coach it.

Tegu Non-Magnetic Perfect Blocks, 120 pieces

20% below the maker's regular priceBuilt to lastAges 3–10 yrs
$40$50 on tegu.com, checked Oct 20, 2026

Beautiful wood blocks in a modern palette. They look nice enough to leave out in the living room, which is half the battle for getting kids to play with blocks.

Honest drawback: Non-magnetic, so towers topple more easily than with Tegu's magnetic line. Some kids find that frustrating, others find it more satisfying.

PlanToys 50 Unit Blocks

Built to lastAges 2–8 yrs
$89.99 on plantoys.com, checked Oct 20, 2026

Proper unit blocks, the kind every good preschool classroom has, made from reclaimed rubberwood. PlanToys says they use formaldehyde-free glue and water-based dyes.

Honest drawback: Fifty blocks is a starter set. Classrooms use hundreds.

Seventy pieces with 20+ activities designed by a team of child development experts. Toddlers get easy wins, and it grows into real engineering with ramps, arches and pegs.

Honest drawback: Premium price for blocks, so you're paying for the design and the activity guide.
